Law School Rankings In The United States

<p><b>Law school rankings</b> are a specific subset of college and university rankings dealing specifically with law schools. Like college and university rankings, law school rankings can be based on empirical data, subjectively-perceived qualitative data (often survey research of educators, law professors, lawyers, students, or others), or some combination of these. Such rankings are often consulted by prospective students as they choose which schools they will apply to or which school they will attend.</p> <p>There are several different law school rankings, each with a different emphasis and different methodology. Most either emphasize inputs or readily measurable outcomes (i.e., outcomes shortly after graduation); none measure value-added or long-term outcomes. U.S. News & World Report organizes rankings into two main sections. The first section is a "Top 145" that lists the top one hundred forty-five schools in order from highest ranked to lowest ranked. While the top 145 law schools are ranked individually, U.S. News groups the remaining schools, or the bottom 25 percent of those that are ranked, into a "Rank Not Published" group. Schools that fall into this category are listed alphabetically and not by actual ranking. U.S. News also ranks each school's specialty programs using a similar method, if applicable. U.S. News ranked 195 schools in 2012. Each school's U.S. News ranking tends to fluctuate annually. U.S. News's ranking system has incurred various criticisms over the years due in no small part to its arbitrary nature. The American Bar Association has issued disclaimers of law school rating systems. The ABA encourages prospective law students to consider a variety of factors in making their choice among schools.</p> <p>U.S. News rankings are heavily weighted toward "reputation", which is measured through a survey with small sample size and low response rates. The reputation scores are highly correlated with the previous years' reputation scores and may not reflect changes in law school quality over time.</p> <h3><span id="Consistency_at_the_top_of_the_U.S._News_Rankings">Consistency at the top of the <i>U.S. News</i> Rankings</span></h3> <p>Although <i>U.S. News</i> has published an annual version of the rankings since 1987 with the exception of 1988-89, there has been remarkable consistency at the top of the <i>U.S. News Rankings</i>. Yale Law School has been ranked first every single year. Additionally, Harvard, Columbia and Stanford have always appeared in the top five. Some have argued the consistent placement of these schools at the top has simply reinforced their position, leading to a "feedback loop" because of the heavy reliance by <i>U.S. News</i> on opinion surveys. [2]</p> <p>There exists an informal category known as the top 14, or T14. This term refers to the 14 institutions that continually claim the top spots in the yearly U.S. News & World Report ranking of American law schools. Although "T14" is not a designation used by US News itself, the term is "widely known in the legal community." These schools, listed below, have seen their ranking within the top fourteen spots shift frequently, but have not placed outside of the top fourteen since the inception of the annual rankings with the exception of Cornell trading places with UCLA during the inaugural rankings in 1987. Because of their variable placement within the top fourteen, but remarkable consistency of these fourteen schools at the top of all 180+ schools, they are occasionally referred to collectively as the "Top Fourteen" in published books on Law School Admissions, undergraduate university pre-law advisers, professional law school consultants, and newspaper articles on the subject.</p> <h4><span id="Schools_that_rank_in_the_top_14_.28aka_.22T14.22.29">Schools that rank in the top 14 (aka "T14")</span></h4> <p>The schools that have consistently ranked in the "Top Fourteen" since the inception of the rankings are (in alphabetical order, ignoring terms denoting the type of school, such as "University"):</p> <ul><li>University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, in Berkeley, California.</li> <li>University of Chicago Law School, University of Chicago, in Chicago, Illinois.</li> <li>Columbia Law School, Columbia University, in New York, New York.</li> <li>Cornell Law School, Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York.</li> <li>Duke University School of Law, Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina.</li> <li>Georgetown University Law Center, Georgetown University, in Washington, DC.</li> <li>Harvard Law School, Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.</li> <li>University of Michigan Law School, University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.</li> <li>New York University School of Law, New York University, in New York, New York.</li> <li>Northwestern University School of Law, Northwestern University, in Chicago, Illinois.</li> <li>University of Pennsylvania Law School, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.</li> <li>Stanford Law School, Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California.</li> <li>University of Virginia School of Law, University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia.</li> <li>Yale Law School, Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut.</li> </ul><h4><span id="Characteristics_of_the_top_schools_in_the_U.S._News_Rankings">Characteristics of the top schools in the <i>U.S. News</i> Rankings</span></h4> <p>There exist common characteristics across these top schools. Reputation is a key driver of their placement, according to Anna Ivey, noted law school admissions counselor, who declared, "A degree from a top-14 school will be portable nationally" in a <i>Washington Post</i> interview. Another complaint is that a prospective law student should take into account the "fit" and appropriateness of each school himself, and that there is thus not a "one size fits all" ranking. Others complain that common rankings shortchange schools due to geographical or demographic reasons. One critic has gone so far as to create a website that sarcastically ranks US magazines. <i>U.S. News</i> is placed alone in the "Third Tier."</p> <p>The American Bar Association (ABA), has consistently refused to support or participate in law school rankings. Further, the Association of American Law Schools has also voiced criticisms of <i>U.S. News'</i>s ranking system. Carl Monk, its former executive director, once went so far as to say "these rankings are a misleading and deceptive, profit-generating commercial enterprise that compromises U.S. News and World Report's journalistic integrity."</p> <p>As a response to the prevalence of law school rankings, the ABA and the LSAC publish an annual law school guide. This guide, which does not seek to rank or sort law schools by any criteria, instead seeks to provide the reader with a set of standard, important data on which to judge law schools. It contains information on all 200 ABA-Approved Law Schools. This reference, called The Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools is provided free online and also in print for a small cost. A similar guide for Canadian Law Schools is also published by the Law School Admission Council and is called Official Guide to Canadian Law Schools. These guides seek to serve as an alternative to the <i>U.S. News</i> Rankings and law school rankings in general.</p> <p>Additionally, the American Bar Association issued the MacCrate Report in 1992, which outlined many fundamental problems with modern legal education and called for reform in American law schools. While the report was hailed as a "template for modern legal education", its practice-oriented tenets have met resistance by law schools continually ranked in the "top 14."</p> <p><i>U.S. News</i> has not allowed these criticisms to go unanswered. They regularly outline and justify their methodology alongside the rankings, and have even published defenses of their value. Additionally, law professors William Henderson and Andrew Morriss have come out with a study criticizing law schools' (and the ABA's) refusal to adopt any better objective comparison method for the continued widespread reliance on U.S. News. Henderson and Morriss allege that law schools' attempts to "game" their U.S. News ranking by manipulating postgraduation employment statistics or applicant selectivity have led U.S. News to adjust its methodology accordingly, resulting in a counter-productive cycle. They go on to suggest that the ABA should use its accreditation power to mandate greater transparency in law schools' statistical reporting.</p> <p>In March 2011, Loyola Law School Dean Victor Gold penned an op-ed in the Huffington Post, accusing <i>U.S. News & World Report</i> of "refus[ing] to consider diversity as a factor in its ranking system." Gold asserted that "[t]here is a broad consensus among law school deans and professors that diversity enriches law school education." When a school's ranking drops, fewer admitted applicants accept spots at the school, and people may get fired. Likewise, when a school rises in the rankings, the school often accidentally over-enrolls. This pressure has also resulted in various schools "gaming the rankings." In a March 2003 article in Student Lawyer, Jane Easter Bahls stated that, in order to appear more selective, some law schools reject applicants whose high LSAT scores indicate that they probably would go somewhere else. Other schools, in an attempt to increase the amount of money spent per student, increase tuition and return it to the students as financial aid.</p> <h2><span id="Alternatives_to_the_U.S._News_Rankings">Alternatives to the <i>U.S. News</i> Rankings</span></h2><br><br> <p>There are several different law school rankings, each with a different emphasis and different methodology. In 2013, University of Pennsylvania Law School is ranked first, and is followed by University of Chicago Law School and Columbia Law School.</p> <p>The National Law Journal provides a comparison of its employment-based rankings to U.S. News rankings. For students who are primarily interested in lucrative employment outcomes rather than scholarly prestige, this comparison may suggest which law schools are most undervalued by the market.</p> <h3><span id="Scholarship_Driven_Rankings">Scholarship Driven Rankings</span></h3> <h4><span id="Social_Science_Research_Network">Social Science Research Network</span></h4> <p>The Social Science Research Networkâ€"a repository for draft and completed scholarship in law and the social sciencesâ€"publishes monthly rankings of law schools based on the number of times faculty members' scholarship was downloaded. Rankings are available by total number of downloads, total number of downloads within the last 12 months, and downloads per faculty member to adjust for the size of different institutions. SSRN also provides rankings of individual law school faculty members on these metrics.</p> <h4><span id="Leiter_Rankings">Leiter Rankings</span></h4> <p>Professor Brian Leiter compiles a regular series of evaluations called "Brian Leiter's Law School Reports" in which he and other commentators discuss law schools. Leiter's rankings tend to emphasize the quality and quantity of faculty scholarship, as measured by citations in a select group of journals.</p> <h3><span id="Judging_the_Law_School_Rankings">Judging the Law School Rankings</span></h3> <p><i>Judging the Law School Rankings</i> are sometimes called the Brennan rankings or the Cooley rankings, in reference to the President of Cooley Law School who was involved in their creation. Thomas M. Cooley Law School â€" a school consistently placed in the fourth tier by <i>U.S. News</i> â€" created its own set of rankings. The first edition of these rankings, called "Judging the Law Schools" was published in 1996 by Thomas E. Brennan, founder and president of the Cooley Law School. This online publication, now in its tenth edition, measures only ABA data such as first time bar passage rates, LSAT scores, academic facilities, student and faculty diversity, as well as twenty other objective measures. It is available on the Cooley Law School website. Academic Brian Leiter calls their system, which does not poll perceived reputation and places Cooley Law School higher than schools such as Stanford and Berkeley, "preposterous."</p> <p>The ranking system advocated by the school has come under criticism for the methodology used to determine placement. The school maintains that judging a legal education by what caliber of students enter will not adequately address the quality of lawyers which come out. However, the Cooley ranking system has been criticized for never actually mathematically addressing this issue. Instead, a host of less relevant criteria, like volumes in library, were introduced to offset the UGPA and LSAT indicators. In the tenth edition of the Cooley ranking system, Cooley Law ranked itself 12th in the United States ahead of law schools such as Stanford Law School, University of Michigan Law School, and Duke University School of Law. In the twelfth edition, it ranked itself second.</p> <h3><span id="Gourman_Report">Gourman Report</span></h3> <p>Dr. Jack Gourman, a professor at California State University, Northridge, published the Gourman Report, a ranking of undergraduate and graduate schools. The last edition to include law school rankings was published in 1997. Among the criticisms particular to the Gourman Report rankings are that the school rankings in each subcategory (administration, faculty, library, alumni, etc.) are identical to the overall rankings, it favors large, public universities and the use of an opaque methodology that prevents the reader from careful analysis.</p> <h3><span id="Hylton_Rankings">Hylton Rankings</span></h3> <p>Another set of rankings is the Hylton Rankings, prepared by Dr. J. Gordon Hylton of Marquette University's Law School. Hylton billed his rankings as <i>U.S. News</i> data "without the clutter." The rankings consider only LSAT (converted median) and peer assessment (as measured by U.S. News' survey of law professors). The much-discussed "top fourteen schools," though ordered differently, remain the same. The five highest ranked law schools are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and the University of Chicago in that order.</p> <h3><span id="Leiter_Rankings_2">Leiter Rankings</span></h3> <p>Leiter's Law School Rankings is a <i>set</i> of rankings published by Brian Leiter, a law professor at University of Chicago School of Law. Each ranking is based on a single factor such as how many Supreme Court clerks, or how many employees in top law firms came from each school, or the LSAT scores of students entering the school.</p> <p>Critics of the Leiter Rankings say that they reflect biases, as the reader can choose to follow whichever criteria are important to them. The Leiter Rankings are also criticised for not giving schools a single overall ranking. Adherents of the Leiter Rankings see these as the <i>advantages</i>.</p> <h3><span id="QS_World_University_Rankings">QS World University Rankings</span></h3> <p>The 2013 QS World University Rankings for Law ranked Harvard Law School first, followed by the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Yale Law School and Melbourne Law School.</p> <h3><span id="Vault_rankings">Vault rankings</span></h3> <p>The career information and survey site Vault.com released its first set of law school rankings in 2008. Based solely on the surveys of nearly 400 hiring partners and recruiting professionals from across the United States, the rankings reflect how survey participants rated incoming associates on their research and writing skills, knowledge of legal doctrine, possession of other relevant knowledge (e.g., science for IP lawyers), and ability to manage a calendar and work with an assistant. Without turning directly to statistics or educational quality, the Vault rankings attempt to quantify which schools produce the most marketable graduates in the private sector. Roman Stearns</i> was allowed to proceed against the university while lawsuits against individual school officials were thrown out.</p> <p>The National Center for Science Education noted, "One of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs is Wendell Bird, a former staff attorney for the Institute for Creation Research. As a special assistant attorney general for Louisiana, he defended the state's "equal time" law, which was ruled to be unconstitutional in <i>Edwards v. Aguillard</i>. The National Center for Science Education works in collaboration with National Academy of Sciences, the National Association of Biology Teachers and the National Science Teachers Association, which consider creationism and intelligent design to be pseudoscience.</p> <p>The Association retained leading intelligent design proponent Michael Behe to testify in the case as an expert witness. Behe's expert witness report claimed that the Christian textbooks were excellent works for high school students and he defended that view in a deposition.</p> <p>On March 28, 2008 the defendants won a legal victory when their motion for partial summary judgment was granted, and the plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment was denied. "Your competition is fierce â€" your backbone sapped â€" unless you train well," warned an early advertisement in the <i>Atlanta Constitution</i>. "You want to grow. Will indecision balk your efforts? Are you always going to put off the 'get ready' for a better place? You want promotion. Then get ready."</p> <p>After beginning to prepare these men (many of whom were already middle-aged and married) for career advancement through an initial "business science" course in 1912, Georgia Tech officially started its Evening School of Commerce the following year. By the time that newspaper ad was published in 1914, the school had moved from campus to occupy the seventh floor of the downtown Walton office building (no longer standing).</p> <p>Tech's School of Commerce rapidly proved popular, with its focus on such business areas as accounting, finance, commercial law, business organization, and management. By 1915, the <i>Atlanta Constitution</i> was reporting that the school was "supported by leading Atlantans, many of whom have donated scholarships." By 1917, it was the third largest department at Georgia Tech, which was founded in 1888 as Georgia School of Technology as part of efforts to modernize a "New South."</p> <p>Today, under the leadership of Dean Steve Salbu, the school is working hard to become the world's preeminent school for business and technology.</p> <p><b>Driving Force Behind School's Creation</b></p> <p>Georgia Tech engineering alumnus William M. Fambrough (ME 1903) played a key role in the formation of Georgia Tech's Evening School of Commerce, championing the idea to other graduates.</p> <p>Vice president and general manager of mechanical engineering firm J.B. McCrary Co., Fambrough pushed for Tech to offer a course in "business science," which he began co-teaching in 1912 along with his colleague and fellow Tech alumnus J.B. McCrary (ME 1891).</p> <p>Fambrough, then president of Tech's Alumni Association, promoted the idea of a full school heavily and helped raise the funds necessary to make it happen. He argued that "ignorant of Georgia's industrial and business possibilities, too many Tech graduates were going north to work for large corporations rather than staying home to develop the state and enrich themselves," according to <i>Engineering the New South: Georgia Tech, 1885-1985</i> by Robert C. McMath Jr.</p> <p>When the Evening School of Commerce officially opened for the 1913-1914 academic with a class of 44 students (who paid tuition of $50), Wayne S. Kell served as the first dean. But Fambrough stayed active as general counselor and an Advisory Board member.</p> <p><b>Opening Doors of Opportunity</b></p> <p>In 1917, another Dean, J.M. Watters, saw the Evening School of Commerce as a place that should open doors of opportunity to women. "The demands of the Army are taking thousands of young men away from business," he said at the time. "Capable young women are taking their places in many instances, and there is no good reason why the very efficient women in Atlanta offices should not qualify themselves for executive positions…</p> <p>"It may be that quite a number of Atlanta young men, content with the job they have because a better one requires preparation, may find themselves working under women managers before many years have passed," Watters added.</p> <p>By 1921, when the School of Commerce graduated its first woman, Annie Wise (who was already a college-educated school principal when she started), the school was seeing a "marked increase" in its female enrollment, reported the <i>Atlanta Constitution</i>.</p> <p>"In the school, one of the most popular of all the divisions for women is the advertising selling branch," said one <i>Atlanta Constitution</i> article. "Many young women of marked originality in writing and salesmanship ability have turned to this class to secure basic training in the alluring field of advertising."</p> <p><b>Rolling with Big Changes</b></p> <p>During those years, the only admittance women students gained to Tech was through the Evening School of Commerce. But their limited entry came to halt in 1934, when Georgia's new Board of Regents â€" created to consolidate higher education in the state â€" made the controversial decision to move the popular school to the University of Georgia as a cost-saving move during the Depression.</p> <p>The school then became known as the University System of Georgia Center Evening School (which in turn became Georgia State University in 1955). But business education never really stopped at Tech. In 1934, the Institute established the Industrial Management program to meet the need for managers who could thrive in industrial and technical settings such as plants and factories.</p> <p>For years, Tech's business degrees were called industrial management. What would transition into an MBA program by the early 21st century started as the master of science in industrial management in 1945, the first professional management degree authorized in the state.</p> <p><b>Evolving Student Body, Faculty</b></p> <p>Women weren't admitted again at Georgia Institute of Technology until 1952. When Joel Cowan (IM 1958) arrived two years later, he could count the total number of women students across campus on fewer than 10 fingers. "We had regular mixers with students at Agnes Scott College, and a good number of people from my day married women from there…," he remembers.</p> <p>"Tech's campus was much more compact in those days, so after freshman year, you were thrust out into the city, unless you had seniority in a fraternity house," says Cowan, who began a successful career as a real-estate developer soon after graduation, founding Peachtree City, Ga., in 1959. "Back then, everyone â€" even the industrial management majors â€" wore their slide rule and pocket protectors everywhere they went on campus."</p> <p>Cowan, who now teaches as an adjunct professor in the Scheller College, notes that in those years, far fewer students than today arrived at Tech knowing that they wanted to study business. They often first explored the engineering options that Tech was far better known for at the time. But that trend has reversed dramatically over the last decade.</p> <p>The school's journey to becoming the highly ranked College it is today gained steam in the 1960s, as it attracted more prestigious faculty who were focused on research, says Phil Adler, a retired professor of management and holder of the Hal and John Smith Chair.</p> <p>"The school evolved heavily during those years," remembers Adler, who joined the faculty in 1962. "By 1969, the school officially became the College of Industrial Management, and we created a PhD degree the following year."</p> <p><b>Graduating Top Leaders</b></p> <p>Adler, who retired in 2000, credits the loyalty and success of the College's alumni for much of the great progress the school has made through the years.</p> <p>He has kept in regular contact with many of his former students, inspiring so much devotion that a group of alumni raised a large sum of money to dedicate a fourth-floor faculty wing of the College's current building to him in 2005. "I'll match our school's graduates up against the alumni of any university in the world," Adler says.</p> <p>Just a handful of the business leaders Adler taught during his 38-year career at Tech include Thomas A. Fanning (IM 1979, MS IM 1980, chairman, president and CEO of Southern Company), Joseph W. Rogers Jr. (IM 1968, founder chairman of Waffle House), Jack Guynn (IM, 1964, retired president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta), Huber L. "Herky" Harris. Jr. (IM 1965, former CEO of INVESCO), and David Dorman (IM 1975, former CEO of AT&T and current chairman of Motorola).</p> <p>"That's just the tip of the iceberg of the great success of our students," says Adler.</p> <p><b>Expanding Opportunity</b></p> <p>In the 1970s, the College had moved from a floor of the Skiles Classroom Building to occupy larger digs, the Groseclose building, where it remained until 2003. By the mid-1980s, the College had dropped "industrial" from its degree names.</p> <p>"That word potentially limited which recruiters might look at our school," Adler remembers. "It implied a process like manufacturing, when we had graduates going into all types of fields."</p> <p>For nearly a decade starting in 1990, the business school was shifted under the umbrella of the Ivan Allen College of Management, Policy, and International Affairs (which included liberal arts). Alder believes that the university administration of the time thought it made sense to group management alongside the social sciences because of the shared focus on people. "However, eventually there was enough pressure from faculty and powerful alumni that we got out of it," he says.</p> <p>The business school returned to standalone status as Georgia Tech College of Management in 1998, and soon gained a new dean, Terry Blum, who would help position the business school for a period of remarkable growth. "Terry was the right person at the right time," says Larry Huang, IM 1973, a former chairman and current member of the College's Advisory Board.</p> <p><b>Moving to Center Stage</b></p> <p>One of Blum's most visible accomplishments during her seven-year dean as dean was the move of the College into its home in Technology Square, a development at the heart of Atlanta's Midtown business community. This bustling area also includes the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, other educational and economic-development centers, and popular restaurant and retail establishments.</p> <p>Construction began in September 2001, and by July 2003, the College had moved from the Groseclose building across the Interstate bridge linking main campus to Technology Square. By 2006, construction teams had considerably widened the bridge to enable landscapers to groom strips of park space on either space of the road and plant trees along tall walls to hide any view of the heavy traffic speeding below.</p> <p>This aesthetically enhancing project was important not only to Tech Square, but also to the entire Institute, as the Fifth Street bridge serves as a major gateway to campus from the Midtown neighborhood that has continually gained in prestige and importance.</p> <p>Integral to the Tech Square area are the Centergy office building and the award-winning MidCity Lofts, both developed around the same time. The high-rise condos that have sprung up all around are the visual evidence that Midtown is perhaps the hottest live-work community in Atlanta.</p> <p>Near the center of it all, the College's current 189,000-square-foot building has provided students with the opportunity to attend classes just around the corner from companies where they can find great internships, co-op jobs, and careers.</p> <p>Though perhaps hard to believe today, at outset of the Tech Square project, the area was considered rather blighted (thought it bordered the historic Biltmore building and was just a few blocks from the restored “fabulous” Fox Theatre). The area contained little more than dilapidated warehouse space before community leaders dug in their shovels for a groundbreaking new era.</p> <p>Within a year and a half, the College achieved its $45 million fundraising goal to cover the cost of its new home. Funded without state dollars, this state-of-the-art, building (LEED-certified for environmentally friendly design) is one of few Georgia Tech facilities to be fully funded privately.</p> <p><b>Passing the Baton</b></p> <p>With building funding completed, Blum announced in 2005 that she'd be stepping down in a year to pursue her research interests, including creation of Tech's interdisciplinary Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship.</p> <p>Steve Salbu, who'd been an associate dean at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas-Austin, succeeded Blum as dean in August 2006. "By every measure imaginable, Dean Salbu has been able to build upon my legacy, taking the College from exceptionally good to truly great status," says Blum, holder of the Tedd Munchak Chair.</p> <p>Before pursuing the deanship here, Salbu had fielded numerous headhunter calls about other dean positions over the years. "I talked to so many schools that made me think, 'This is a suicide mission,'" he jokes. But his closer inspection of Tech's business school revealed tremendous promise. "This was one of the exceptions where I thought this school could really be brought to the next level of prestige and excellence."</p> <p><b>Fulfilling a Bold Vision</b></p> <p>In his quest to position the College as the leading school for business and technology, Salbu immediately set about boosting the size of the faculty. When he started, the number of tenured/tenure-track professors was 53. Now the school has 80.</p> <p>"The cornerstone of a great business school is a great faculty," explains Salbu, holder of the Steven P. Zelnak Chair. "My highest priority as dean has been to accelerate the growth of our faculty. These world-class faculty members will drive the College's reputation; ensure the continuation of existing programs, and the development of innovative new ones."</p> <p>In order to recruit and retain the best talent to teach students, Salbu worked to secure and deploy 24 expendable term professorships (each lasting three or four years) as a creative "bridge to the future" as the College sought many more permanently endowed chairs and professorships.</p> <p>Despite the tough economic climate, the College's Development team was proving successful at its efforts to secure funding to attract the world's best professors and students when it scored big in fall 2009.</p> <p>That's when the College received an anonymous commitment of $25 million, $20 million of which was a dollar-for-dollar Challenge Grant designed to inspire charitable gifts and commitments from other donors to the College's endowment.</p> <p><b>Building a New Brand</b></p> <p>As the Challenge Grant drew close to fulfillment in summer 2012, the anonymous stepped into the light, pledging another $25 million in order to rename the school as the Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business.</p> <p>Scheller, who earned his bachelor's degree from the College in 1952, said, "I owe so much to Georgia Tech and rigorous education I received, and I've always felt a tremendous amount of gratitude and a strong desire to give back to the Institute. I want Georgia Tech and the business school to be number one.</p> <p>"We already have the leadership to make that happen with Steve Salbu as dean and our superior faculty, student body, and alumni,” says Scheller, chairman emeritus of Silberline. “I hope that my gift will now be the catalyst for permanently lifting the business school into the ranks of the world's finest."</p> <p>With the name change from College of Management to College of Business, what had always been a business school finally became officially titled as such for the first time in its 100-year history. The change made sense given that the school offers business administration degrees (BBA, MBA).</p> <p>"We are one of the oldest business schools in the world,” Salbu says. “For 100 of its 127 years of existence, Georgia Tech has provided business education. The name, scope and organizational structure have changed many times during the years to meet the changing needs of students and the business community. None of the changes over the past century are as transformational as the Scheller gift."</p> <p><b>Future Leadership</b></p> <p>After seven years on the job, Dean Steve Salbu announced in early 2013 that he would not be seeking a third term after his current one expires on June 30, 2014.</p> <p>“Beginning July 1, 2014, I will resume my faculty role as the Cecil B. Day Chair in Business Ethics and Director of the new Cecil B. Day Program in Business Ethics, here at Georgia Tech,” he said. “It has been a joy to work with Institute leaders, fellow deans, alumni, faculty, staff and students who are so smart, ambitious, talented, driven and collegial,” he says. “I love Georgia Tech dearly and always will. When including the Supplemental program and Credit by Exams, TTUISD serves over 25,500 students in total. 310 students graduated in the 2013-2014 year.</p> <p>Students can enroll in courses through TTUISD’s full-time, diploma-seeking program, where students take all the state-required courses and assessments to graduate. Upon graduation, students will receive a Texas high school diploma.</p> <p>Another option is the supplemental program.
