HISTORY
In response to a recommendation in 1923 by then Baylor President Samuel Palmer Brooks, Baylor University launched a new academic entity - the Baylor School of Commerce and Business Administration - to better equip men and women in the different fields of business.
The business school's impressive complex, which includes the Hankamer and Cashion buildings, was made possible in the late 1950s when Earl Hankamer, a Houston alumnus of the School of Business, generously provided the lion's share of funds needed to complete the original limestone Hankamer building at the corner of Fifth Street and Speight Avenue.
Other generous gifts from loyal friends of Hankamer over the years have permitted sizable additions to the school, which have resulted in the very latest classroom designs, computer labs, study areas, and offices. Most recently, the Financial Markets Center was built to create a boardroom type atmosphere, but have the functionality of a classroom, a videoconferencing suite and a place for students to conduct financial research. The facility serves as the classroom for the Practicum in Portfolio Management course for the student-managed Philip M. Dorr Alumni and Friends Endowed Investment Fund, currently valued at approximately $7.1 million.
More than 30 years ago, in 1977, Hankamer was one of the first academic institutions in the country to establish a Center for Private Enterprise and Entrepreneurship-an educational program to broaden the understanding of the American economic system. By 1984, a separate center, later endowed by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Baugh of Houston, was required to meet the growing needs of entrepreneurs and growth companies.
Today, the Hankamer School of Business enrolls more than 2,600 students in business courses each year, including more than 300 graduate students. The school operates with 148 faculty members and 36 staff members through six academic departments and eight professional centers. The school has more than 20,000 alumni located in all 50 states and numerous countries around the world.
PROGRAMS
Our mission statement calls for us to engage our students in active learning. No better example can be given than the program offered by our Finance Department where students manage a real dollar portfolio, the Phil Dorr Alumni and Friends Investment Fund, which, with a current market value of $7.1 million, is one of the largest student-managed portfolios in the nation.
Baylor is one of only a handful of schools offering a Professional Selling program. The Schoolâs Sports Sponsorship & Sales degree is the only one of its kind, with guaranteed internships at professional sports teams as a part of the program. Students in the Music & Entertainment Marketing program have the opportunity to work internships with major music, film, and theatre companies.

OPPORTUNITIES AT BAYLOR
PEP
Baylor MBAs use their business skills to give back to the community. More than 25 MBAs are volunteering alongside business executives to help prisoners, who are part of the Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP), prepare business plans. The Baylor volunteers are assigned to one student or team so they can become familiar with the PEP students' business plan(s).
FOCUS FIRM
The Focus Firm project provides a singular opportunity for students to gain real-world business experience handling real-world problems. Rather than simply going over cases or running through simulations, Baylor offers MBA students an inside view of an actual company with real-time issues by partnering with an individual corporation through a semester long Focus Firm course.
INVESTMENT FUND
Baylor University has a student-managed investment portfolio currently valued at approximately $7.1 million. The team that manages this equity securities portfolio also learns the tools and techniques used by professionals to analyze and select individual stocks. They do this in a specially designed âhands-onâ finance course, the Practicum in Portfolio Management. Students enrolled in this course manage the investment fund, which has been endowed with monies contributed by Baylor alumnus Philip M. Dorr and other Baylor alumni and friends, along with additional funds from the University.
ETHICS
True to its mission to prepare leaders with integrity, the Hankamer School of Business launched an Ethics Focus Week in 1999. By the time Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, the foundations for what would become the Dale P. Jones Business Ethics Forum were firmly in place. In addition to a panel of speakers from both academia and the business world, the forum includes an ethics case competition for MBA students. MBA teams are given a 12- to 20-page business scenario that poses an ethical dilemma; two days later, they present recommendations to a panel of judges on how the leader of such a company should act.
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES
A wide range of study abroad programs are available through bilateral relationships with international universities offering MBA candidates the exciting opportunity to experience an academic culture of another country. Baylor enjoys bilateral exchange programs with universities across the globe â" from Yonuk College in Thailand, to the University of Edinburg in Scotland. Baylor also offers study opportunities in Mexico, Hong Kong, France and China.
CORPORATE ENTREPREURSHIP
In 1977 Baylor became one of the first business schools to establish an entrepreneurship specialty. Today, Baylor is internationally recognized for its Innovative Educational Research and Outreach program, and is sharpening its focus through a concentration in corporate entrepreneurship. A four-course sequence in entrepreneurship culminates in an experiential course in technology entrepreneurship that can be taken on campus or in combination with a summer internship in Shanghai, China. Student teams in this course â" on campus or abroad â" assess and develop commercialization plans for operating companies, driving growth through technology-based innovation.
